Major rail milestone achieved as London to Cardiff electrification is completed

Major rail milestone reached as trains between London and Cardiff are electrified for the first time in 130 years.

After more than 130 years since the capital cities of England and Wales were connected by the Great Western Railway, via the Severn Tunnel, we have reached another milestone in the railways history with the successful completion of electrification of the railway between Cardiff Central and London Paddington.

Over the past five years Andromeda have been proud to work alongside Network Rail and industry partners, to make a significant positive contribution to the completion of this major modernisation project. Listening to the requirements of Network Rail and addressing issues in the most economically viable and efficient manner has become a trademark of Andromeda’s approach to value engineering, adopted in a number of key areas across the route.

Most notable is the design solution to the limited electrical clearances presented by Cardiff Intersection Bridge, providing substantial cost savings. Andromeda delivered further cost savings through the development of a high-level design to route the ATF around signals and overbridges, used at numerous locations in Wales and England.

We’re proud to have delivered the final AFC designs for Cardiff Central Station and Cardiff West, one of the most complex areas in Wales given the track layout and an area which marked the end of the electrification works for the project.
